Former Cheltenham Player John Brain has passed away

It is with great sadness that Cheltenham Tigers has recently learnt that former Chetenham 2nd Row John Brain passed away on Sunday morning.

Brainer, as he was known to most was part of one of Cheltenhams most successful era’s in the mid/late 90′s. After retirement he coached Worcester to promotion in 2002 and also had spells at Bristol before returning to his home Club Gloucester as Rugby Operations Manager.

Our thoughts are with his family at this difficult time.

London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay

Steve Ratcliffe, Chairman of Cheltenham Rugby Club/Newlands Park had the honour of carrying the Olympic Torch as it passed through Swindon today.

Steve, indeed a local hero, represented not only, the many hundreds of members and sports participants associated with Newlands Park, but also every sports person in Cheltenham.

David Evans, who nominated Steve, said ‘Steve fully deserved this honour for the work he has done at Newlands Park in providing so many sporting opportunities for young people.’

After jogging the 300 yards and still puffing a bit, Steve’ said ‘it was a very emotional and a phenomenal experience and a day I will never forget. I felt very proud to represent Cheltenham and my colleagues at the Rugby Club. There were huge crowds lining the route and Swindon people gave me a very warm welcome, as I ran through their town.Taking the flame from Didier Drogba’s torch made it even more exciting’.

Back to the future…

The 2011/12 season has come to an end… not quite how we planned or intended it to, but that wasn’t due to a lack of commitment or preparation. The SW 1 East league is incredibly tough (it took us four yrs to win promotion last time round!) and after making a cracking start, going into the Christmas break ranked no. 1, we struggled with player continuity & the confidence this breeds after Christmas, finishing 7th. Despite our difficulties with injury & unavailability, we managed to get into the top four and gave ourselves an opportunity to challenge for a promotion play-off place in our first season in this league. This may have been a tall order, but nothing great is ever achieved without setting hard targets. I’m immensely proud of our guys- despite our small squad and a challenging 2nd half of the season, they remained positive, cheerful and committed to the Club and to each other. This to me is the hallmark of a good team and a great bunch of people. Continue reading

Small steps…

It was great seeing so many people at the Prince of Wales Stadium for our last home fixture of the 2011/12 season & i’m gutted that we couldnt put on a show on the pitch. Two special things happened last weekend- Tammy Shakespeare from our ladies section celebrated 20yrs of dedication to the same Club, while Josh Herbert set a new club record for points scored in a season. Unfortunately, Bletchley came to the Prince of Wales & spoilt the party, but credit to them, they needed the win and were hungrier than us on the day. Continue reading
